Choosing the right van for your camper conversion

Base vans explained

Deciding to get a campervan is an exciting time. But before you jump to the interior design options, you first must consider which van will serve as a base for your conversion. We’ll often walk our customers through the various options, considering how they plan to use their van, how many people they expect to join their travels and if their adventures will be based on short breaks or longer time periods.

There’s a lot of vans out there and researching the best options can be overwhelming! So, we’ve broken down some of the key factors you’ll want to consider when choosing your van. Remember, if you have any questions about starting your conversion journey, we’re happy to point you in the right direction. Email us at hello@lovecampers.co.uk

Same van, different names

One of the first things we’re always keen to point out to customers is that despite being made by different manufacturers, many vans are built on the same base. The only differences lie in the branding and trim. So while you may have your heart set on a VW Transporter, it could make more sense to go for a Ford Transit Custom, which is essentially the same van. Bonus – it may be cheaper to buy second-hand, too!

Other common vans which share the same attributes:

  • Citroen e-Dispatch, Peugeot e-Expert, Toyota Proace Electric and Vauxhall Vivaro-e
  • Fiat Ducato, Peugeot Boxer and Citroen Relay
  • VW Caddy and Ford Transit Connect

This knowledge can be a game-changer when searching for the ideal base, potentially unlocking better deals or expanding your options.

Height and wheelbase

Vans come in all shapes and sizes, and your choice can depend on many factors. For instance, long wheelbase (LWB) vans are better suited if you’re regularly travelling with more than two people as they’re more spacious. They’re also good if you’re planning to spend long stretches of time in your van as they can fit in more amenities, such as a full kitchen, shower and toilet.

Short wheelbase (SWB) vans are easier to park and manoeuvre, making them more suitable for urban driving. They’re also perfect for short weekend breaks as a conversion can carry all the essentials with a lower payload. However, SWB models may be better suited for travelling solo or as a couple than a group.

The height of your van is another important factor. High-top models might provide you with all the standing room you need. Vans with lower ceilings may require a pop-top roof in addition to provide you with the space you need to stand up comfortably.

Fuel considerations

Which fuel you want your base van to use is a huge decision to make. While petrol and diesel are the conventional options, hybrid and electric vans are becoming a much more attractive option for those prioritising lower emissions and cheaper running costs in the long term.

  • Diesel: Traditionally a favourite, diesel engines often offer better fuel economy, especially on long journeys
  • Petrol: Becoming increasingly popular, petrol engines are often more suitable for urban environments and shorter trips
  • Hybrid/Electric: These are more eco-friendly than traditional fuel types and generally cost less to run. With the government aiming to phase out new diesel/petrol vehicles over the next few years, this is a more future-proof investment. While electric vans can’t compete on distance, the constantly growing network of charging stations can make up for this compromise.

New or used?

Buying new offers the latest features and a full warranty, while purchasing used can save you money. Whichever route you choose, thorough research and a pre-purchase inspection are essential.

For second-hand vans, there are a few things you’ll want to check before purchasing:

  • Check the van’s MOT history online. There’s nothing necessarily sinister about a few fails in the van’s history, especially if due to minor issues. It’s also helpful to check mileage history here to help be sure that the current mileage is true
  • Check the vehicle’s service history. Not all vans will have a full service history but have a look at what is provided and work out if there is a good reason for the absence of a full service history
  • Check for corrosion. Once a vehicle is too corroded it’s often not possible to deal with fully
  • Research the common faults with the kind of van you are looking at and then specifically research, ask about them and check the service history
