Just because we’re heading into the colder months doesn’t mean you have to put your campervan plans on hold. Autumn and winter offer a unique opportunity to experience nature in a whole new way. However, staying warm in a campervan during the colder months can be a challenge. With a bit of planning and the right gear, you can transform your van into a cosy retreat from the cold.
During the initial design consultation with Love Campers, we’ll ask about your requirements for a cold weather campervan to ensure your van is able to handle whatever the weather throws at it.
Insulating your campervan for maximum warmth
Proper insulation is key to staying warm in your campervan. Here’s some of our recommendations:
- Natural fibre insulation: Natural fibres, such as sheep’s wool, are excellent insulators. They are breathable, which helps to prevent moisture buildup and mould. We use Thermafleece in our conversions
- Window insulation: Insulated curtains or thermal blinds can help to keep the heat in and the cold out. We use curtains from Van-X in our builds. Reflective window coverings can also be effective
- Floor insulation: Insulating your floor can help to prevent heat loss. We use natural fibre insulation but adding a thick rug to your floor will also help
Heating your campervan
Choosing the right heating system for beating the cold weather in your campervan is essential. Here are some popular options:
- Gas air blow heating: These are a popular choice for campervan heating. They are relatively efficient and can provide quick, dry warmth. Some people may be wary of having a gas canister on board but they’re perfectly safe when fitted as per safety standards, using camping gas on the same system as a gas hob. We use Propex and also fit all our campervans with a carbon monoxide detector as standard for peace of mind.
- For larger vans we use Truma air and water heaters as they can be very efficient at heating larger spaces
- Diesel heaters: Diesel heaters are another popular option, especially for off-grid camping. They use diesel from your tank, but are very fuel-efficient and can provide consistent warmth
- Electric heaters: Electric heaters are a convenient option, but they require an electric hook-up. They are handy for small spaces, but can be a drain on energy consumption. We don’t typically fit electric heaters since the alternatives are much better for use in campervans
- Wood burning stove: These can be a bit like marmite. Some people love them and some people hate them. They can provide lots of heat but are difficult to control, so you may find your campervan turning into a sauna! Either way, if you did want one we are able to fit them into our conversions
Cold weather campervan hacks
- Layer up: Wear multiple layers of clothing to trap heat. A good base layer, insulating mid-layer, and waterproof outer layer are essential
- Use thermal blankets: Thermal blankets can provide extra warmth, especially at night
- Drink warm beverages: Sipping on hot drinks like tea, coffee or soup can help to warm you up
- Warm sleeping bag: Invest in a high-quality sleeping bag with a suitable temperature rating
- Thermal clothing: Wear thermal underwear and socks to keep your core warm
- Hot water bottles: A hot water bottle can provide extra warmth in bed
- Prevent damp and mould: Regularly air out your van, wipe away condensation, and consider using a dehumidifier to keep moisture at bay
- Heat your van: Condensation is the enemy in cold weather as it can lead to mould. Heating your van well will protect against it
By following these tips, you can enjoy a comfortable and cosy camping experience in your campervan.
